ROCK — one of the oldest divine titles, the immovable crag you shelter behind or stand on. Distinct from sela ('rock, cliff' as terrain, Obadiah 3): tzur is the STRENGTH-rock, the boulder, and as a name for God it means reliability itself. It saturates the Song of Moses ('the Rock, his work is perfect,' Deuteronomy 32:4, 15, 18, 30-31), Hannah's song ('there is no rock like our God,' 1 Samuel 2:2), and the Psalms ('Jehovah is my rock and my fortress,' Psalm 18:2). ⚠ Habakkuk 1:12 reaches for it at the hinge of his complaint: 'Rock, you established him to rebuke' — he holds onto God as the immovable thing even while accusing him of using a wicked empire. The New Testament applies the title to Christ (1 Corinthians 10:4, 'that rock was Christ'). ⚠ Numbers 20 makes the word's edges matter: the SECOND water-from-rock is not at a tzur at all but at a sela, a crag — and where Exodus 17 told Moses to STRIKE the tzur, Numbers 20 tells him to SPEAK to the sela.
