A WHIRRING insect — a pest named by its noise, and the word is otherwise a cymbal. ⭐ The consonants stand in five verses of the Hebrew Bible and Deuteronomy 28:42 is the only insect among them: twice the word is the cymbal of the temple music (2 Samuel 6:5, Psalm 150:5, loud cymbals), once the land of whirring wings beyond the rivers of Cush (Isaiah 18:1), once a fish-harpoon (Job 40:31; none yet on these pages). ⚠ The KJV reads ‘locust’ and the Geneva ‘grasshopper’, guesses from the context; the Douay ‘the blast’, the Vulgate’s rubigo, rust; the NIV ‘swarms of locusts’, the NWT 1984 ‘whirring insects’; the RV60 «la langosta», the TNM 1987 «insectos zumbadores». This translation prints the whirring swarm and leaves the species open. → first discussed at Deut 28:42
