RIGHTNESS, justice — the masculine noun beside the more familiar feminine tzedaqah, and kept separate here for the reason this project keeps near-synonyms separate: Hebrew does. Broadly, tzedaqah leans toward righteousness done — acts, almsgiving in later usage — while tsedeq leans toward the standard itself, the rightness a weight or a verdict either has or has not. It is the word for honest scales (Leviticus 19:36, balances of tsedeq) and for a right verdict (Deuteronomy 16:18, mishpat tsedeq). ⭐ Deuteronomy 16:20 doubles it — tsedeq tsedeq tirdof — and that doubling stands in exactly ONE verse of the Hebrew Bible. The thirteen versions produce six different constructions of those two words, from the KJV’s ‘That which is altogether just’, which dissolves the repetition into an adjective, to the NIV’s ‘Follow justice and justice alone’, which reads it as exclusivity. ⚠ The verb attached to it is radaf, to PURSUE — the verb used of chasing an enemy — so the sentence does not ask for justice to be admired. ⭐ Deuteronomy 25:15 (now on these pages) pairs it with shelemah, whole: a full and honest stone … a full and honest ephah, Leviticus 19:36's stones of tsedeq rewritten with a reward attached. → first discussed at Deut 16:20
