To SUCCEED, prosper, be made to go well. Genesis 39 uses it as the drumbeat of Joseph's slavery — 'Jehovah was with Joseph, and he became a man who PROSPERED' (39:2), 'Jehovah made everything he did PROSPER in his hand' (39:3), and again in the jail at 39:23. The discomfort is deliberate and belongs to the Hebrew, not the English: the man being described is somebody's property in v. 2 and a prisoner by v. 20. Whatever the word promises, it plainly is not that things are pleasant or that he gets what he wants. KJV 'a prosperous man'; NWT 'a successful man.' → first discussed at Gen 39:2
