INSTRUCTION, teaching, direction — from YARAH, to throw or shoot, and so to point the way (the same root behind MOREH, a teacher). Rendering it 'law' is the Greek Bible's choice (NOMOS) and it narrows the word: TORAH is what a parent teaches a child (Proverbs 1:8 calls a mother's teaching her torah) as much as what a court enforces. Deuteronomy 1:5 says Moses 'undertook to make this TORAH plain' — BE'ER, a concrete verb for digging out or engraving something so it can be read at a run (Habakkuk 2:2). So the book's own account of itself is not 'Moses restated the legislation' but: he set about making the teaching unmistakable.
