tiqqun soferim תִּקּוּן סוֹפְרִים tiqqun soferim

'CORRECTION OF THE SCRIBES' — a short traditional list of passages where Jewish tradition itself reports that the transmitted text is a reverent softening of a blunter original, usually to avoid an irreverent-sounding statement about God. Malachi 1:13 is on the list: the received text has the priests snorting at IT (the offering), the tradition says the original read at ME. This translation prints the received Masoretic reading and reports the tradition — as it did at Genesis 18:22. → first discussed at Malachi 1:13
