A BASKET — the container the firstfruits travel to the altar in. The word stands in four verses of the Hebrew Bible, every one of them in Deuteronomy: 26:2 and 26:4, where the farmer puts some of the first of all the fruit of the ground in it and the priest takes it from his hand, and then twice in the blessings and curses — blessed shall be your basket and your kneading-bowl (28:5) and cursed shall be your basket and your kneading-bowl (28:17, neither yet on these pages), where the two humblest objects in a farmhouse stand for a whole livelihood. ⭐ The chapter that fills it is the last law of the code that began at chapter 12; the chapter that blesses and curses it is the covenant's own.
