A FORM, a shape, a likeness — the noun of the image clause of the Ten Words: ‘you shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any FORM of what is in the heavens above’ (Exodus 20, already on these pages). ⚠ The same noun returns at Numbers 12:8 (already on these pages) with the opposite verb: the temunah of Jehovah is what Moses BEHOLDS. What you are forbidden to make is what he is said to see — and the claim sits directly against Exodus 33:20 (already on these pages), ‘you cannot see my face, for man shall not see me and live,’ forty-six chapters earlier in the same story. The traditions resolve the tension in different directions and this project does not vote. ⚠ The echo survives on part of the shelf and dies on the rest: ASV and NIV both render the Numbers occurrence ‘form’, but KJV and Geneva say ‘the similitude’, NWT ‘the appearance’, and Douay rewrites the clause.
