To STIR UP, agitate, trouble — used of water being disturbed and of people being shaken. ⚠ In John it occurs six times, and the distribution is the point: once of the pool (5:7), THREE TIMES OF JESUS HIMSELF — he 'troubled himself' at Lazarus' tomb (11:33), 'now my soul is troubled' (12:27), 'he was troubled in spirit' (13:21) — and then twice in the mouth of Jesus telling the disciples not to be (14:1, 14:27), which bracket that chapter.
