tapeinosis ταπείνωσις tapeinosis

LOW ESTATE, lowliness, humiliation — a lowly CONDITION, not humility as a virtue. In the Magnificat God 'looked on the TAPEINOSIS of his bondslave' (1:48), the very word Hannah's Greek song uses (1 Samuel 1:11). Luke's point is that God NOTICES the low place and then reverses it; the song spells the reversal out — rulers pulled down, the lowly lifted, the hungry filled, the rich sent empty away. → first discussed at Luke 1:48
