John 4:9's aside ('for Jews have no synchrōntai with Samaritans') is the word's only occurrence in the New Testament, so its exact force is inferred rather than known. The narrow reading fits the scene unusually well, since the whole exchange begins with a request to drink from her jar; the broad reading is the traditional one.
