A rare verb — Isaac 'went out la-SUACH in the field toward evening' (24:63), and no one is quite sure what he was doing. The old readings: to MEDITATE (KJV; a quiet turning-over in the mind), to PRAY (the rabbis made this the origin of the evening prayer), to walk/muse, or even to lament (still grieving his mother, v67). The word occurs only here in this sense, so the shelf spreads out — NWT 'to meditate'; some 'to stroll.' This translation keeps 'to meditate,' the reading that best fits a solitary man in a field at dusk, looking up to see camels — and a bride — on the horizon. → first discussed at Gen 24:63
