The INWARD PARTS — bowels, entrails; and in both Greek and Hebrew idiom the seat of the deepest feeling, where English puts the heart. It is the strongest affection-word available: the related verb splanchnizomai is what the Gospels use of Jesus being moved with compassion at a crowd or a leper, and Judas's entrails 'poured out' in Acts 1:18 are the same noun in its literal sense. Paul longs for the Philippians 'in the splanchna of Christ Jesus' (1:8).
