STUBBORN, TURNING ASIDE — from sur, to turn away, so the picture is of someone who has swerved off a road rather than of someone merely obstinate. It travels in a fixed pair, sorer u-moreh, stubborn and defiant, and that pair stands in two verses of the Hebrew Bible. ⭐ One is Deuteronomy 21:18, the son his parents bring to the elders; the other is Jeremiah 5:23 (not yet on these pages), which gives the identical two adjectives to the whole people — this people has a stubborn and defiant heart. ⚠ Since the sentence attached to the phrase in Deuteronomy is death by stoning, the prophet’s reuse is not a borrowed adjective but a borrowed charge sheet.
