TO REJOICE, to exult — a verb of loud gladness, distinct from samach, the ordinary rejoice of the feasts. ⭐ Deuteronomy 28:63 uses it twice in one verse and in two directions: as Jehovah rejoiced over you to do you good and to multiply you, so Jehovah will rejoice over you to make you perish; 30:9 turns it back a third time, Jehovah will again rejoice over you for good, as he rejoiced over your fathers, and Jeremiah 32:41 promises I will rejoice over them to do them good (neither yet on these pages). It is the bridegroom’s joy over the bride at Isaiah 62:5, and God’s over Jerusalem at 65:19 and Zephaniah 3:17 (none yet on these pages); and it is the enemies’ joy at Lamentations 1:21 (already on these pages), they are glad that you have done it. ⚠ The consonants are also those of sus, a horse; context tells them apart.
