BARBS, thorns — paired at Numbers 33:55 with the near-synonym tzeninim: 'those you leave remaining of them will be as sikkim in your eyes, and as tzeninim in your sides.' Both nouns are true hapax legomena — searched consonantally, neither occurs anywhere else in the whole Hebrew Bible (the other hits for sikkim's own root all belong to an unrelated verb, 'to rise early,' or to the word for darkness). ⚠ The shelf agrees almost universally that whichever word is 'thorns' belongs in the sides and the sharper one in the eyes, but reaches for a different specific English or Spanish word nearly every time — pricks, barbs, irritants, aguijones, púas, astillas — while the Douay-Rheims, working from the Vulgate, breaks the pattern completely: 'nails in your eyes, and spears in your sides.'
