THE SEVEN SPECIES — a later Jewish name, not a phrase the Bible itself uses, for the seven plants Deuteronomy 8:8 (already on these pages) names as the land's own produce: wheat, barley, vine, fig, pomegranate, olive (for oil), and date-honey. The list is still cited in Jewish practice today — first-fruits offerings name exactly these seven, blessings are recited over food drawn from each, and modern Israeli coinage has drawn on the list for its imagery.
