The most disputed word in Genesis. 'The sceptre shall not depart from Judah… AD KI YAVO SHILOH' (49:10). Four serious readings: (1) a NAME — 'until Shiloh comes,' which is what the Masoretic vowels give and the least self-explanatory, since the referent is undefined; (2) a PLACE — 'until he comes to Shiloh,' the town in Ephraim where the tabernacle stood; (3) reading the consonants as SHELLO, 'until that which is his comes' / 'until he comes to whom it belongs' — the understanding behind the Septuagint and Syriac, and apparently alluded to at Ezekiel 21:27, 'until he comes whose right it is'; (4) SHAI LO, 'until tribute comes to him.' ⚠️ The verse has been read messianically in BOTH traditions for a very long time — the Jewish Targums render it 'until Messiah comes,' and Christian readers apply it to Jesus — but that reading rests on options (1) or (3), not on anything the consonants settle by themselves. Modern versions genuinely disagree: KJV/NWT 'until Shiloh come'; ASV with a margin note; ESV 'until tribute comes to him.'
