A DETESTABLE THING — and NOT a synonym for tame, though most modern versions blur the two. Where tame is a status a person can catch and then wait out, sheqets is a verdict on the creature itself, and the same root becomes a verb aimed at the reader: 'their carcasses you shall hold in detestation' (Leviticus 11:11, already on these pages). ⚠ Leviticus 11 uses BOTH words and means different things by them — land animals that fail the two tests are unclean, while sea creatures without fins and scales, and swarming things, are sheqets. Checking which versions keep the distinction is a fair test of a shelf: KJV, ASV, Geneva ('abomination') and NWT ('a loathsome thing') keep it; NIV renders both Hebrew words 'unclean' and the distinction disappears.
