A BOIL, an inflamed ulcerating sore — the sixth plague, 'a SHECHIN breaking out in blisters on man and on beast' (Exodus 9:9-11), severe enough that Egypt's magicians could not stand up under it. The word runs through the rest of the Bible as the mark of affliction: the sores Leviticus 13 teaches the priest to examine; the boil Hezekiah is healed of by a cake of figs (2 Kings 20:7); and the sores that cover Job from the sole of his foot to his crown (Job 2:7). ⚠️ Most pointedly, Deuteronomy 28:27 threatens a disobedient Israel with 'the SHECHIN OF EGYPT' — the plague they watched fall on their oppressors, named as a covenant curse against themselves. → first discussed at Exod 9:9
