shalal שָׁלָל shalal

Spoil, plunder — and the grimmest idiom built on it: nefesh li-shalal, 'his life as SPOIL' (Jeremiah 21:9; KJV 'his life shall be unto him for a prey'): the only plunder you will carry out of this war is yourself. Jeremiah later hands it to the two men who trusted him, as a personal promise — Ebed-melech (39:18) and Baruch (45:5). → first discussed at Jer 21:9
