Spoil, plunder — and the grimmest idiom built on it: nefesh li-shalal, 'his life as SPOIL' (Jeremiah 21:9; KJV 'his life shall be unto him for a prey'): the only plunder you will carry out of this war is yourself. Jeremiah later hands it to the two men who trusted him, as a personal promise — Ebed-melech (39:18) and Baruch (45:5). Proverbs 31:11 uses it flatly and strangely: the husband of the woman of valour 'lacks no SHALAL' — plunder, what you carry home from a raid. KJV keeps it ('no need of spoil'); NWT softens to 'no gain lacking' and RV to 'ganancia'. It is part of a martial word-cluster in the poem alongside chayil. → first discussed at Jer 21:9
