The name God announces at 17:1. 'Almighty' is the Greek-and-Latin guess (LXX pantokrator, Vulgate omnipotens); the Hebrew meaning is uncertain — 'God of the mountain' (Akkadian shadu), the steppe, or a fertility word (Genesis 49:25 sets 'Shaddai' beside 'blessings of the breasts, shaddayim, and of the womb'). Kept untranslated here, as a name. Psalm 91:1 puts it in the psalm's opening image, 'in the shadow of Shaddai' (be-tzel Shaddai), a small sound-play as well as a shelter. → first discussed at Gen 17:1
