SABBATH — the noun, not merely the rest. ⚠ It is not in Genesis: Genesis 2:2-3 has God RESTING (the verb shavat, related but distinct) and blessing the seventh day, but the word shabbat itself is not spoken until here, four chapters before it becomes commandment at Sinai (Exodus 20:8-11). Its first appearance in the Bible doubles the noun for emphasis — shabbaton, shabbat-qodesh, 'a solemn rest, a holy sabbath' (v23) — as if the text has some catching up to do. → first discussed at Exod 16:23
