TO ROAR — specifically the roar of a LION, and in Hebrew usage most often the roar over prey, the sound made after the kill rather than while hunting. ⚠ It is the first thing God does in the book of Amos ('Jehovah ROARS from Zion', 1:2) and it is given by a man who had spent his life on the edge of the Judean wilderness, where the sound was a working hazard rather than an image. Amos makes it his own at 3:8: 'a lion has roared — who will not fear? The Lord Jehovah has spoken — who will not prophesy?' The same verb is used of God at Jeremiah 25:30, Hosea 11:10 and Joel 4:16, and of enemies in the Psalms; 1 Peter 5:8 gives it, in Greek, to the adversary. → first discussed at Amos 1:2
