THE BOOK OF JASHAR — literally 'the Book of the Upright,' a collection the Bible quotes and we no longer possess. It is cited twice: for the sun standing still at Gibeon (Joshua 10:13) and for David's lament over Saul and Jonathan (2 Samuel 1:18). ⚠️ Scripture openly names sources that have not survived — also 'the Book of the Wars of Jehovah' (Numbers 21:14) and the royal chronicles repeatedly referenced in Kings — which tells us the biblical writers worked with archives and expected readers to know it. (Several later works circulate under the title 'Book of Jasher'; none is the book quoted here.) → first discussed at 2 Samuel 1:18
