A TEAR, a rip — from schizō, 'to split' (the root of 'schism' and, by a long road, 'schizophrenia'). It is the Gospels' word for a rip in a garment and for the temple curtain torn in two. ⚠ In Mark the family runs a deliberate-looking course: the heavens are TORN OPEN at the baptism (1:10), a schisma is what a bad patch makes of an old coat (2:21), and the curtain is torn from top to bottom at the death (15:38) — the word Mark chose for the sky is the word for what happens to a garment. Paul asks the Corinthians to have no schismata among them and instead to be katērtismenoi — 'mended together', the very verb used of the sons of Zebedee MENDING THEIR NETS (Matthew 4:21). The image is not a broken machine but torn cloth, and the request is not uniformity of opinion but repair.
