'BROAD PLACES, room' — the name of the third well, the one no one fought over: 'he called it Rehoboth, and said, For now Jehovah has made ROOM (hirchiv) for us, and we will be fruitful in the land' (26:22). From rachav, 'to be wide,' the root of rechov, a city's open 'square.' After Esek (contention) and Sitnah (enmity), the patient man is given room — the Hebrew for relief and enlargement, when the pressing-in finally opens out.
