PILGRIMAGE FESTIVALS — literally 'foot-festivals,' from regel, 'foot': the three annual occasions requiring every Israelite male to appear before Jehovah in person (Exodus 23:14-17), the Torah's first calendar. Unleavened Bread (tied to the Exodus itself), Harvest (firstfruits of the grain, later called Shavuot/Pentecost), and Ingathering (at the year's end, later Sukkot/Tabernacles) — named here in outline, with the full ritual detail supplied only much later, at Leviticus 23 (not yet on these pages).
