'I am too SMALL' — literally 'I have become small' (from qaton, 'to be little'), Jacob's word at the head of his prayer: 'I am too small for all the kindness (chesed) and all the faithfulness you have shown your servant' (32:11; KJV 'I am not worthy'). It is the great reversal of his life spoken in one word: the man who spent every year grasping to be GREAT — who has just become 'two camps' of wealth — confesses himself little before God, remembering that he once crossed the Jordan with nothing but a walking-stick.
