An INTERPRETATION — specifically of a dream, and the word is almost confined to the Joseph story (with its Aramaic cousin pesher in Daniel and at Qumran). Egypt had a professional dream-reading industry, with reference manuals: the Dream Book of Papyrus Chester Beatty III lists dreams in columns beside standard readings. So when the two imprisoned officials complain that 'there is no one to INTERPRET' (40:8), they mean no specialist — they are in jail, cut off from the professionals. Joseph's answer sidesteps the whole trade: 'Do not INTERPRETATIONS belong to God?' He does not claim the gift; he assigns it upward, then asks to hear the dream.
