A FRIEND — the noun behind phileō, to love or be fond of. ⚠ John 15 uses it three times in three verses and defines it by information rather than affection: 'I no longer call you SLAVES, because the slave does not know what his master is doing — I have called you FRIENDS, because everything I heard from my Father I have made known to you' (15:15).
