A BREACH — a gap burst through a wall; from parats, to break out. The midwife's cry at the birth of Judah's twin is a pun on the name she is giving him: 'How you have BROKEN OUT (paratsta) — a breach (perets) upon you!' (38:29). It sounds like dismay and is kept as a name. Perez matters far past this chapter: Ruth closes by tracing 'the generations of Perez' ten names down to DAVID (Ruth 4:18-22), and Matthew opens the New Testament with the same line, naming 'Perez and Zerah by Tamar' (Matthew 1:3).
