PENTECOST — Greek for FIFTIETH, and simply the Greek name for the Hebrew feast of Shavuot, Weeks: counted as fifty days from the barley offering of Passover week (Leviticus 23:15-16). ⚠ It is a HARVEST festival — the wheat harvest, with two loaves brought as first-fruits — and one of the three pilgrim feasts that filled Jerusalem with visitors, which is why Acts 2 has a crowd of Jews 'from every nation under heaven' standing outside a house in the city. Luke says the day was 'being FILLED UP' (symplērousthai), a fullness-word he likes. The later Jewish tradition associating Shavuot with the giving of the Law at Sinai is attested after the New Testament period, so the library records that a Sinai echo here is a possible reading and not a demonstrated one. → first discussed at Acts 2:1
