A CARCASS — the word for a dead body when the point is that it is meat, not a person. It is used of animals and of corpses left unburied, and it is chosen deliberately in Numbers 14:29-33, where it falls three times in five verses over the generation sentenced to die in the wilderness: 'your carcasses will fall in this wilderness.' ⚠ The shelf splits on whether to keep the harshness: KJV, Geneva and Douay-Rheims print 'carcases', while the ASV softens to 'dead bodies' and the NIV to 'bodies'.
