A SPRING — water that moves by itself, as against a cistern or a dug shaft. ⚠ John 4 sets it against phrear and the two words sort by WHO IS SPEAKING: the narrator and Jesus say pēgē (4:6 twice; 4:14, 'a pēgē of water leaping up'), the woman says phrear (4:11, 12). They are looking at the same water and naming it differently, and the vocabulary IS the misunderstanding. The KJV prints 'well' at all four and the distinction vanishes; NWT ('fountain'/'well') and the archaic Spanish RV 1909 ('fuente'/'pozo') both keep it. → first discussed at John 4:6
