PRESENCE — or an arrival that results in a presence; from pareimi, 'to be alongside.' ⚠ In ordinary Greek it is a technical term: the state visit of a king, emperor or governor to a city, with the welcome, the delegation and the honours that went with it. That background matters, because the word is not a synonym for 'coming' in the sense of travelling. Matthew uses it four times and ALL FOUR are in chapter 24 (vv3, 27, 37, 39); it appears nowhere else in any Gospel, and then becomes Paul's standard term. KJV/ASV/NIV read 'coming,' which blurs it into erchomai, the ordinary verb the same chapter uses at vv30, 42 and 44; NWT reads 'presence' and keeps them distinct, which is followed here.
