A COW — a mature female of the herd. Hebrew keeps it distinct from eglah, a HEIFER, the young animal Abram cuts in half at Genesis 15:9; the two are different words and this project renders them differently. ⚠ Which is why Numbers 19:2 prints 'a red COW' rather than the famous 'red heifer'. The phrase parah adumah occurs in exactly one verse in the Hebrew Bible, and the English name that everyone knows is a minority reading: four of the ten versions checked say heifer (KJV, ASV, NIV, TLB) and six say cow, among them Geneva, the NWT 1984 and the Douay-Rheims — the Douay adding 'of full age' to rule the young animal out — and the whole Spanish shelf says vaca.
