To visit, attend to — for good or for ill: 'Jehovah VISITED Sarah' with a son (Genesis 21:1; KJV 'visited'), and the same verb 'visits' Jerusalem's doings upon her in judgment (Jeremiah 21:14). The Bible's word for God turning his attention toward someone — what happens next depends on the ledger. In Numbers the same verb runs the census: to paqad is to MUSTER, to number an army (Numbers 1:3, 19); the pequdim are 'those mustered.' And in one chapter it turns three ways — the fighting tribes are paqad-mustered, the Levites are NOT paqad-counted (1:47) but are paqad-APPOINTED over the tabernacle (1:50).
