PAIN, hurt, grief — the noun of atsav, to hurt or grieve; it is the word for the pain of childbirth at Genesis 3:16. ⚠ Psalm 139:24 asks God to see whether there is a derekh OTZEV in the speaker, literally a WAY OF PAIN, and the KJV prints 'any wicked way' in the line while admitting the truth in its margin: 'Heb. way of pain, or, grief'. The NWT alone puts the literal in the line. Whether it means a way that causes pain, one that leads to it, or an idolatrous way (a homonym means 'idol') is undecided. → first discussed at Psalms 139:24
