ORPHAN — the ordinary word for a child with no parents, and the source of the English word. It appears twice in the New Testament: John 14:18 and James 1:27 ('to look after orphans and widows in their distress'). ⚠ KJV prints 'comfortless' at John 14:18 — consistent with having chosen 'Comforter' two verses earlier, and wrong twice for the same reason. ASV 'desolate', Geneva 'fatherless', NWT 'bereaved'; Douay-Rheims alone of the older versions, and RV in Spanish, simply say 'orphans'. The plain word is doing real work: the chapter has been about the FATHER's house. → first discussed at John 14:18
