Burnt offering — literally an 'ascending' offering (from alah, 'to go up'): unlike every other sacrifice, the WHOLE animal goes up in smoke, none of it eaten. First at Noah's altar (8:20); its full law opens Leviticus (ch. 1), where it is the offering of total self-gift.
