The management of a HOUSEHOLD — oikos, 'house', + nomos, 'law, order'; the running of an estate by a steward (oikonomos), and by extension an ordered PLAN or administration. It is the source of English 'economy'. ⚠ At 1 Timothy 1:4 it is God's oikonomia 'in faith' — his ordered arrangement, received by trust — set against speculation that builds nothing; a large part of the later manuscript tradition instead reads oikodomia, 'edifying' (one letter different), which the KJV followed with 'godly edifying'.
