TUMOURS — two words for one affliction, because the text is written with one and read with the other. At Deuteronomy 28:27 the consonants say ofalim, swellings, and the margin directs the reader to say techorim. ⭐ The written word stands in four verses of the Hebrew Bible: this one and 1 Samuel 5:6, 9 and 12 (not yet on these pages), where the Philistine cities holding the captured ark are struck with it — and in all four the read word is substituted, the one 1 Samuel 6 then uses for the golden tumours sent back with the ark.
