To REST, settle, come to a stop — the verb behind NOACH (Noah, 'rest') and the noun MENUCHAH, a resting-place. It is one of the book of Joshua's key promises: the point of crossing the Jordan is not conquest for its own sake but REST, somewhere to stop after forty years of not stopping (1:13, 15; 21:44; 22:4). ⚠️ Hebrews 4 later reads this rest as UNFINISHED — 'if Joshua had given them rest, God would not have spoken of another day' — turning the land-rest into a figure for a rest still ahead, and leaning on the fact that 'Joshua' and 'Jesus' are the same name in Greek (IESOUS).
