TASKMASTERS and FOREMEN — the two ranks between Pharaoh and the slaves. The NOGSIM (from a root for 'press, drive, exact') are the Egyptian slave-drivers; the SHOTRIM are Israelite foremen set over their own kinsmen to enforce the quota. ⚠️ The distinction matters: when the bricks fall short it is the ISRAELITE foremen who are beaten (5:14) — the system makes the oppressed enforce their own oppression and then punishes them when it breaks. Keeping the two words distinct keeps that cruelty visible. → first discussed at Exod 5:6
