netek נֶתֶק netek

A SCALE — tzaraat's own subtype for the scalp and the beard, diagnosed by a different tell than the rest of the chapter: not white hair but hair that has turned THIN and YELLOW (13:30). Some dermatologists have proposed favus, a fungal scalp infection that does exactly this, though the identification (like most in this chapter) cannot be checked against a physical specimen. ⚠ KJV keeps the old English word for it, ‘scall’ (related to ‘scale’ and ‘scalp’, now otherwise dead in the language); this translation reads the plainer ‘a scale’ instead, on the reader test — an obsolete word believed to be understood is worse than a live one that sends the reader to this entry. The text itself treats netek as a named subclass of tzaraat rather than a different disease: v30 calls it, in one breath, both ‘a scale’ and ‘scaly disease of the head or the beard.’ → first discussed at Lev 13:30
