Two Hebrew words for INTEREST, always paired in the law (25:36-37; Exodus 22:25, already on these pages; Deuteronomy 23:19-20, not yet on these pages) and never clearly distinguished by the text itself. Later interpreters read neshekh (from a root meaning 'to bite') as interest deducted in advance from the loan, and tarbit ('increase') as interest added on at repayment — two mechanisms, one prohibition. The ban targets profiting specifically from a fellow Israelite's poverty (25:35), not lending as such; nothing here forbids charging a foreigner interest (Deuteronomy 23:20). → first discussed at Lev 25:36
