FOREIGN, strange, other — the 'foreign gods' (elohei nekhar) Jacob orders his household to bury before they go up to Bethel (35:2, 4), among them surely the teraphim Rachel had stolen from Laban (31:19). To 'put away the elohei nekhar' becomes the refrain of every later turning-back to God — Joshua at Shechem (Joshua 24:23), Samuel (1 Samuel 7:3), the great reforms of the kings. The word also names the ben-nekhar, the 'foreigner/outsider' the law both shelters and, at the Passover, fences off (Exodus 12:43).
