nechoshet נְחֹשֶׁת nechoshet

BRONZE — or copper; Hebrew has one word for the metal and its alloy, and the shelf splits between them. It is the metal of the tabernacle’s altar and of the serpent Moses lifts on the pole (Numbers 21:9, already on these pages), nechash nechoshet. ⭐ The word stands in three verses of this book: the copper Israel will quarry from the hills of the good land (8:9, already on these pages), the sky over a cursed Israel’s head (28:23), and Asher’s bars of iron and bronze at 33:25. ⚠ Leviticus 26:19 (already on these pages) had made the sky like iron and the land like bronze; Deuteronomy turns the metals over and drops the like. The KJV, ASV and Douay read ‘brass’, the NIV ‘bronze’, the NWT 1984 ‘copper’; the RV 1909 «de metal», the RV60 «de bronce», the TNM 1987 «de cobre». → first discussed at Deut 28:23
