A PASTURE-ABODE — the grazing ground a shepherd keeps his flock in, and so also a settled dwelling. It is the quiet hinge of Jeremiah 23: God promises to bring the scattered flock back 'to their naveh' (v3), and eight verses later 'the ne'ot of the wilderness have dried up' under the curse (v10). The same word for the place promised and the place ruined. It is the word behind the Shepherd Psalm's 'green pastures' (Psalm 23:2) and behind Jerusalem as 'a quiet habitation' (Isaiah 33:20). Where English needs 'fold,' 'pasture' and 'habitation' for one Hebrew noun, the connection has to be pointed out rather than heard. → first discussed at Jer 23:3
